I wonder if anything we play on a computer, or a console, or in any version of VR can be as gripping as a real sports game. I’ve never been in any competitive gaming situations, except with my friends on LAN playing AOE or Counter Strike, but I’ve never felt, sitting in front of a computer the same elation or despair that you see on real sportsman…
I’m wondering if the limited physical stimulation that gaming involves can still allow one to fee the kind of ecstasy that players out there feel? Doesn’t the level of exertion have something to do with how much emotion something generates? I don’t know, but I’m wondering if people sitting down can actually feel the same way people running around and jumping etc. do.
Of course the next question is whether or not the feeling you get when you do whatever you do, running around etc. can really be duplicated on a screen. I’m not talking about killing people and stuff. That I wouldn’t even want duplicated, but just the elation of scoring a goal, or dunking? Can a gamer really feel that?
What is the gaming equivalent of the emotion? A kill in Counter Strike? Does that feel as good? I know that to the causal gamer, well me, at least, the comparison is kind of mute… NBA live was never as good as the real thing, even though I never got to the point where I could dunk or anything or court, it just felt better.
I’m guessing this is a never ending discussion, because both ‘games’ have their pros and cons. Still its interesting to consider this, specially after having watched the wimbledon finals today.
