The Handheld gaming device market is getting kind of hot. Funnily, it’s the makers of the Ipod hat seem to have the early lead in the market. With the I pod touch and the I phone they seem to have cornered the phone-gamer segment of the market, if such a thing actually exists.
Most I pod/I phone users have at least one game on their devices, with a study showing that most have upwards of 10. With most of these devices being able to connect to the internet, downloadable content is pretty much expected. But the success of the app store from apple has been something of revelation.
Essentially what’s happened is that buying storage medium for your portable gaming device has become an obsolete mode of operating, its standard to just have downloadable content. This is something the new PSPgo will incorporate in its design, completely doing away with cartridges.
At this point however, speculation abounds that Sony might be making a competitor, phone/gaming device integrating the best of the sony ericsson and PSP design into one, however Sony has refused comment for the moment.
