Is Andy Roddick’s Fitness Enough for a US Open?

by Randy LaRoche on October 10, 2009

Andy Roddick is at an inflection point as far as his career is concerned. The 2009 US Open could dictate where his career goes from here.

On one hand, he has seen the rebirth of his talents, leading him to arguably his best season in a while thanks to being as fit as he was when he won his only major in 2003.

At the same time, Roddick is aging and the clock is ticking on his career. His role in men’s tennis is crucial right now, as he’s really the only player who stands a chance to bring the US its first grand slam since Roddick captured the championship in 2003.

At year’s end, he’ll be 27 years old. While he currently stands 5th in the world, three of the four ahead of him are four years younger or more. The other? Roger Federer, who has had a rebirth of his own to coincide with Roddick. In fact, Federer has been the thorn in his side for years.

Roddick came oh so close to winning Wimbledon 2009, taking Roger Federer the distance and nearly defeating him in the 5th set to strip the crown away from the kind of the grass.

Realistically, he might only have seven legitimate chances left in his career. By the end of 2011, he’ll be on the verge of 30 years old, which might as well be 60 in tennis years.

He got a slight taste of what he is capable of at Wimbledon, now it is up to Andy Roddick to close the deal and hush any critics he may still have.

There would be no better place for Roddick to win than in front of a home crowd in New York. Time will tell if he has what it takes.

Where Did Airsoft Originate?

by Teri Eldritch on October 10, 2009

The concept of airsoft was originally created in the country of Japan. Airsoft guns were created in Japan in order to give the people something they could own in place of a real gun. This is because the laws in Japan are so strict as far as firearms go, that it is nearly impossible for anyone there to ever own a real gun (especially a pistol).

Because it was near impossible to even hold or own a real gun in Japan, exact, non-lethal replicas of these guns were made, which later became known of airsoft guns. These airsoft guns started to come in many shapes and forms, such as airsoft pistols, automatic electric airsoft rifles, and even airsoft sniper rifles.

This gave the people of Japan the option of owning a gun that looked and felt like the real thing, but was only capable of shooting plastic airsoft BBs. Even though these replicas will never be capable of firing live rounds, or even shooting small metal or lead projectiles (like bb/pellet guns do), they are probably the closest thing to a real gun that almost anyone in Japan is every going to get their hands on.

Once these airsoft guns started to become a big hit in Japan, then came the sport of airsoft. The actual sport (or game) of airsoft was a huge success, and soon after made its way to other countries, such as Great Britain, Asia, Canada, and eventually the USA.

Now airsoft is played by people of all sexes and age groups, and there are many different types of games. The types of airsoft games played range anywhere from small skirmishes, to full blown tactical group battles. Sometimes airsoft guns are even used for historical re-enactments as well.

In many cases airsoft rifles are even used for many different types of military and police training exercises. Most commonly the automatic assault rifles are used for military training purposes. In most cases a small handful of airsoft rifles are used for this, which are the airsoft ak-47, the airsoft-m16, and the M14 airsoft sniper rifles.

The tactical gear used for airsoft games is quite diverse. Some of the common items and accessories used in airsoft are: camo face paint, protective airsoft vests, airsoft face masks, tactical throat mics, and more. The sky is pretty much the limit when it comes to airsoft gear.

As far as the price goes, airsoft is generally a fairly cheap sport to get into. Much cheaper than paintball in most cases, especially when you consider how much cheaper airsoft ammo is compared to the cost of paintballs. I think it is fair to say, that all-in-all, airsoft is a fun, and fairly easy sport to learn, that can be enjoyed by virtually anyone, male or female, child or adult.

5 Ways Apple is About to Beat Up Sony & Nintendo’s Portable Game Systems.

by Melissa Everge on October 6, 2009

Thanks to their just-announced upgrade to the iPod touch, Steve Jobs and Apple have really made their priorities clear — they’re out to get the Nintendo DS and Sony’s PSP. Sure, the iPhone and the Touch aren’t made specifically for messing around with games, but they do contain a ton of them, and Apple’s most recent television commercials reflect this fact.

We thus give you 5 great reasons Apple’s platform is going to take over the handheld gaming world.

#5: The App Store is Simply Massive.

Developers have always been selling their games through the normal shops, but by using Apple’s store, it means a lot less overhead is involved, and you can get your games out to the masses really quickly.

It’s the most ideal direct-download system that yet exists, and publishers are flocking to it.

#4: A New List Means the Big Games Are Seen More Often.

Many developers felt their bigger projects were getting lost in the shuffle by not being priced at $0.99, which drove down quality and meant more focus on little, short games. Apple’s new ‘profitable’ list has changed that entire pattern.

This could be huge for the platform as a whole — we might see massive new games.

#3: You’ve Got All the Big Guns on Board.

With two obvious omissions (being Sony and Nintendo), you’ve got nearly every other big company currently doing stuff for Apple’s platform — Rockstar, Sega, and the like. This is only going to keep getting better.

It seems like daily we’ve got a new developer happily announcing an original or a high-profile port to the App store platform, and this is only going to increase in the future.

#2: Innovative Controls Ensure Innovative Games, Too.

Although it doesn’t have a normal pad-and-button style like the other guys, the lack of those things has really forced developers to do brand new stuff. Maybe you’ve seen Flight Control around?

That style of control is entirely unique to the iPhone (the Nintendo DS has some similar games), and nobody knows what incredible innovations that take advantage of the iPhone’s unique setup are in the pipeline.

#1: Big Numbers Mean Big Games.

When a platform reaches critical mass, it’s simply inevitable that quality developers are going to turn to it, realizing that its tools are excellent, its distribution methods require a very small amount of overhead, and the potential for profits is there.

The App store is continuously expanding in size and capacity, just recently hitting 2 billion downloads, and with Apple’s rigorous standards, things are only going to get better.

Why Women’s Tennis Needs to be Revered

by Lynn Bromash on October 6, 2009

Really, what’s the deal here?

When Steffi Graf ruled the tennis court people did not enjoy it. When both of the Williams girls happened to be dominating anyone on her way to the finals, the public didn’t like it. And currently when tournaments are wide open to a bigger field? Tennis lovers do not enjoy it.

Most admit that the Williams duo dominate most of the time. However injuries and diminished non-Slam tournament schedules mean they presently play every other before the championship match. Although once more we must bear in mind that very recently the above-mentioned gripes about this regular battle in the championship and their governance over other players.

Thus now we have Dinara Safina boasting the number one spot in the rankings and the US Open seeds. And what do they say? She doesn’t deserve it since she has not won a Grand Slam (not to mention that she has lost in a couple slam title recently.) But she’s getting to slam finals and she is fairly amusing along the way, on the court and off.

Yesterday Safina was forced to battle it out again, nearly becoming the first number one seed to be beaten in the 1st round. Was it entertaining? I thought so. Although we will learn all regarding the illegitimacy of the ranking system, and so forth.

And then there was Venus Williams last night–moreover pushed to three sets. Furthermore entertaining. (Moreover note that Venus didn’t have the most successful of summers post Wimbledon.) Although in all likelihood to be heard is the prevalence of injuries among the sisters Williams and their “distractions” off the courts.

And presently Kim Clijsters is back and as opposed to being very psyched – which one should be since she is fun and polite and a worthy player – tennis lovers are all like “okay what does it indicate regarding the women’s game that she might return and maintain a 6-2 record during the summer year?”

Well I think it says that she – just like she always has -trains fantastically well. Also that she’s a veteran and she has practically zero to lose.

So let’s specifically finish all the trash talking, please. Agreed, there are issues in the ladies game. (Such as the lack of selection in terms of playing technique.) But I for my part enjoy that it is everyone’s conjecture as to who’ll play in the finals in less than two weeks. And I am excited about witnessing how they get there.

Lake Fishing.

by Michael Adams on October 6, 2009

Lake fishing is very similar to river fishing, or slow-flowing river fishing anyway. The kinds of fish in rivers and lakes tend to be the identical, which means that the tackle, bait and lures will be the similar too, although you might require a longer rod, say, a beach-casting rod to cast your bait farther out into the lake. Lake fish will often grow to a larger size than river fish, so your line should be more robust as well.

Lake fish conventionally been classified under three general headings. Namely, game fish, food fish, and bait fish. Bass, trout, pike, pickerel, muskellunge, perch, etc., are identified as game fish because of their sporting value. Carp, suckers, some of the catfish, yellow perch, etc., are considered food fish.

This latter group is not considered to provide the sport that the so-called game fish do, but they do have a genuine economic and sporting value. The third kind are the minnows and tiddlers that can be used as bait for the first two classes.

It is not simple to descibe the right technique to cast long distances, but it does come nuturally to quite a few fishermen. However, if casting does not come effortlessly to you, you will need to watch other lake or beach fishermen. If you are not happy doing that, you will be able to find a video on the subject. However, the best method to learn how to cast is to go down to the beach , watch an expert at work and try to do the same.

Nevertheless, lake fishing is great fun and the novice will quickly master the correct technique of lake fishing. Consequently, I have placed a few practical guidelines here to help you master lake fishing more rapidly.

i]. Aim to adopt a smooth, whip-like cast. Nevertheless, if you crack the whip too hard, you will certainly lose a great deal of bait, flies or lures..

ii]. Timing is the all-important issue in both the back cast and forward cast.

iii]. Study the habits of the fish that live in the lake that you intend to fish. All fish have both similar and dissimilar habits, so either obtain a book or video or join a club to find out more.

iv]. The majority of fish prefer some sort of cover, either for themselves or because their prey will like it there. Be cautious of weeds, reeds and submerged logs or you will lose plenty of line and tackle..

v]. As I mentioned before, lake fish tend to be larger, because food is copious and there is bags of room. A large bass, for example, can easily weigh 10-12 lbs, so make sure that your rod and line are up to the task. A rod of seven feet six inches to eight feet in length can tolerate these sizes of fish.

Lake fishing is not so truly unusual from other types of fishing, so if you put a little effort into learning the methods and fish concerned in lake fishing, you will soon master the skill and become an expert at lake fishing.

Home Decorating Ideas

by Michael James on October 6, 2009

If you’re keen on renovating or redecorating your home, you’ll need some great home decorating ideas. These aren’t all that hard to come by and if you’re quite an artistic person with an eye for what looks good, then you shouldn’t have any problem getting great home decorating ideas for yourself. Most people however are probably like me and don’t have a clue where to start and what to change to make their homes a brighter place to live.

The first time I started a home decorating project, I had no idea at all and didn’t know what to tackle first. Should I strip the wallpaper first or take out the carpet? Should I fit that new double-glazed door or should I buy a sanding machine to clean off all those wooden bits around the room. The list, as you might have guessed, is endless and I could keep on but in the interests of time, I’ll leave the rest up to your imagination.

Home decorating ideas are all well and good, but if you’re looking to do major renovation work, then you should probably call in professional renovators – people who can handle the job properly for you. If you’re doing this, then make sure that the renovators you go with are willing to adhere to the home decorating ideas that you give them, and won’t go off on a tangent of their own.

Alternately, you can just choose to overlook the hideous wallpaper that’s been surrounding you for a while now, but go ahead with some of the smaller items on your list of home decorating ideas. This will have a two-fold benefit for you.

The first one is that you’ll have full control of the situation and you’ll be able to oversee every step in detail if you wish. The second benefit is that by starting off small, you can see if you really want to continue renovating your home and progress to the more ambitious home decorating ideas that you have on your list.

Whichever method you go with, you must first be aware that once you start to renovate your home, money will run out of your pockets like water out of a tap and won’t stop until you actually stop. So, if you’re going to take on this whole renovation project, be prepared to find yourself skint until you finish.

So, although home decorating ideas are a great way to jazz up your home, keep a tight grip on your wallet and keep an even tighter one on yourself, as you’ll want to use any and every good idea you come across if you think will look great in your home.

Once you get started you’ll be practically unstoppable – a force to be reckoned with and your home will look just the way you’ve been imagining it ever since you bought it.

The Overall Benefits of the Razor A Scooter

by Owen Jones on October 2, 2009

The Razor A scooter is a great idea for everyone wanting to keep fit. These days loads of individuals are desk-bound and we all seem to have a smaller amount time for just going out for a stroll, which is the age-old answer for putting on a few pounds. The Razor A scooter can assist you here.

How often have you thought, ‘I haven’t got time to walk’ or ‘I can’t be bothered to walk’ and then have jumped in the automobile instead? But what if you had a Razor A scooter to hand? You could just scooter down to the store or the park. You could take the dog for more walks and at a snappier speed too, something your dog will surely be thankful for.

The Razor A series or its bigger siblings, the Razor Pro or Razor Cruiser, are not dear ranging between $40 and $60, cheaper at Amazon or eBay, yet they will rapidly save you hundreds of dollars on fuel. After all, starting a car is often the most costly section of a short journey.

The Razor A scooter is also very versatile. Weighing in at approximately six pounds, anybody could carry it without difficulty up or down a couple of stairs or lift it in or out of the trunk of a car. But not only that, it folds up too, so that the whole scooter is only a couple of feet long by six inches high by six inches wide. It will without difficulty fit in a passage sideboard or the boot of a car.

Your Razor A scooter could be used in many ways to save you money and keep you fitter. For instance, if you need a loaf of bread, you could hop on your scooter. You could take you dog to the park. You could scooter with your kids ‘in a pack’. You could put a Razor A scooter in the boot of your automobile and scooter the last half a mile into school. And every time you get on that scooter, you are burning not motor fuel but fat!

Think of it that way. You are saving fuel and money and burning your excess calories at the same time. You are also exercising your legs and raising your metabolism and heart rate as well. That is everything the bank manager and the doctor advised all rolled into one activity. And you will be in illustrious company too.

Do you know who else’s kids ride Razor A scooters? Well, there’s Al Pacino’s twins for a start. Now, Al Pacino is not short of a few dollars, I’m sure, so you can be assured that he’s going to be looking for the finest for his kids, isn’t he? And Lisa Kudrow and her son. And Liv and Cal, offspring of Julianne Moore and Bart Freundlich. You would be forgiven for thinking, ‘Aw well, they got theirs for nothing!’ and that may be true, but at roughly $40 who cares?

The advantages in saved motor fuel and increased exercise make the Razor A scooter a must-have essential in my book. So, take another look at the Razor A scooter and keep in mind, someone’s birthday’s coming up before long.

Some Astranomical Facts

by Owen Jones on September 30, 2009

How much information on astronomy should there be for all the objects and phenomenon in the entire universe? Consider that there are somewhere around 1 x 10 ^22 stars in the universe, that’s a one followed by 22 zeros. Then consider that many of those stars have planets revolving around them. Then consider all the moons that orbit those planets, then the comets and asteroids, the galaxies these stars form, the nebulae and black holes and everything else out there. The amount of information and data is staggering. This article, which presents astronomy facts, certainly won’t contain every fact. But these are quite interesting facts nevertheless.

Let’s take a look at a small subset of astronomy: “the brightest stars as seen from Earth”. That’s discounting the Sun which is about 250,000 times closer than the next nearest star. It’s so bright that when the sky is viewed from the Earth, it washes out all the other stars in the sky during a phenomenon called daylight.

Remember that according to the scale for the magnitudes given, lower numbers are brighter. Our Sun would be about -26.73, while the full moon is -12.6. So, with that in mind, here are the top 5:

#5 is Vega, which is in Lyra, and which means ‘falling eagle’ in Arabic. It’s about 25 light years away from the Earth, with a magnitude of 0.04.

When considering these astronomical facts, please remember that ‘brightest from Earth’ doesn’t mean largest or brightest. The Sun is not the largest or brightest star in the universe or even the galaxy, yet it appears so bright because it is so near compared to other stars.

#4 is Rigel – a very bright, bluish-white supergiant star in the constellation Orion. It is a binary star, with an average apparent magnitude of 0.12. It’s scientific name is Beta Orionis. Rigel is Arabic for ‘foot’. It’s about four light years from Earth.

#3 is Arcturus. The translates as ‘guardian of the bear’ from the Greek. This star is about 37 light years away from us. It is situated in the constellation of Bootes, close to The Great Bear. It has a magnitude of 0.00

#2 Canopus – the Greek name of the pilot of the sailing ship Argo in the stories of Jason and the Argonauts, is the brightest, however, because it is 313 light years from Earth, it’s only second in this list of the five brightest stars seen from Earth. It has a magnitude of -.62.

#1 is Sirius, which means ’scorching’ in Greek. It’s also called the ‘Dog Star’ because it is the brightest star in the constellation of Canis Major, which means ‘The Big Dog’ in Latin. It is only 9 light years from Earth, which makes it the second closest of these top five. From Earth it has a magnitude of -1.44, which makes it quite easily the brightest star as seen in the night sky.

This information doesn’t even scratch the surface on the subject of astronomy facts but it’s something to consider next time you look into the night sky.

The Best Microsoft Xbox 360 Games I’ve Ever Owned

by Lance Baker on September 30, 2009

It’s amazingly been 3 whole years since I bought my Xbox 360, and I thought I’d give a quick rundown about the best games I’ve ever owned. I have a slight partiality toward sports games, so there may be a bit of a bias here. Don’t hold it against me. Nonetheless, this is about my favorites, so whatever I say goes!

5- Tiger Woods golf. I’ve always been a huge fan of this series, dating back to my high school days when the game had first come out on the Playstation system. This is as real as it gets as far as golf games go, and amazingly, the game seems to improve each time they release a new version. I love it.

4- John Madden football. I don’t even know which year to choose, I love this game so much, but if we’re talking about the Xbox 360, we have to go with the most recent one, Madden 2010. This is an exceptional football game, and after getting it wrong during the first release for the 360, the Madden series has returned to its former glory.

3. NHL 2K series. I absolutely love hockey, and I’ve been playing hockey on video game consoles ever since my elementary school days on the Sega Genesis. The fast-paced action of hockey games have always drawn me in, and the improved graphics and game play with each year keep me buying each new version every time it comes out.

2- NBA 2K9. I’m a big basketball fan, and this game is the best basketball game I’ve ever played. I know that some people like the Live series more than the 2k series, but I’ve always been a 2k guy myself. The game play is realistic, and the online mode is simply fantastic. High marks from me.

1. Rock Band. This one may bug some pure “gamers”, but the most fun I’ve ever had on an Xbox 360 has come from playing Rock Band, hands down. Did I mention I’m a music lover too?
