Michael Owen, Manchester United’s rarely used striker, has spoken out about his feelings of anger and disappointment after the forward was forced to endure taunts and boos from Newcastle fans during his side’s Premier League clash against the Magpies this week.
Manchester United played out a fairly drab goalless draw with Newcastle in a game that was made all the more entertaining for the widespread booing of the striker when Sir Alex Ferguson introduced him as a substitute. The man himself was, however, not quite as impressed with the boos that started to ring around St James’ Park.
As all football fans will know, Owen famously signed for Newcastle after failing to succeed at Spanish club Real Madrid, with his transfer back in 2005 for a hefty price-tag of 16 million. Owen scored a total of just 30 goals during his time up north, and was hit by a spell of injury problems, so he is now widely perceived by Newcastle fans to be a man who follows money rather than his heart, with the man thought to be happy to sit on the bench and pick up a hefty wage. The player’s move to Manchester United that occurred when the Magpies were relegated didn’t help to alter this perception.
Owen took to popular social networking site Twitter after the United game to state that he felt extremely disappointed to receive such a poor reception from the fans at Newcastle, before stating that if the fans “knew the facts”, they may not have been quite so harsh on him.
The exact nature of these facts wasn’t divulged by Owen, who has so far not made too much of a positive impression up in Manchester and, it would seem, his England days now look firmly behind him. However, if he can react well and use this latest criticism to inspire him to a summer of intense training while avoiding the sort of injuries that he seems to attract like a magnet, he could yet show both Sir Alex Ferguson and England manager Fabio Capello that he is worth taking another chance on after all.
