Macaroni: An uptight American businessman goes to Naples and finds some incomplete personal business left over from his last visit while he was an amorous cadet in the Second World War. 2 of the most charming entertainers ever try to keep this film together, and nearly triumph. Cast includes Jack Lemmon, Marcello Mastroianni, Daria Nicolodi, Isa Danieli, and Maria Luisa Saniella. (104 minutes, 1985)
Darby O’Gill and the Little People: Momentous Disney fantasy in reference to an Irish caretaker (Sharpe) who tells so many unbelievable stories that no one believes him while he affirms he’s befriended the Baron of Leprechauns. This film is a real pleasure, with some beaming visual effects. Cast includes Albert Sharpe, Janet Munro, Sean Connery, Jimmy O’Dea, Kieron Moore, and Estelle Winwood. (90 minutes, 1959)
Darby’s Rangers: Garner does well in this WW2 action film as the leader of attack troops in North Africa and Italy, concentrating on relations amid his platoon and their beach romances. Cast includes James Garner, Etchika Choureau, Jack Warden, Edward Byrnes, Venetia Stevenson, Tarin Thatcher, Peter Brown, Corey Allen, Stuart Whitman, and Murray Hamilton. (121 minutes, 1958)
Hold Back Tomorrow: This is another of Haas’ oddball cheaply made dramas. This one is about a condemned killer who weds a gal on the day before he is put to death. Cast includes Cleo Moore, John Agar, Frank de Kova, Harry Guardino, and Jan Englund. (75 minutes, 1955)
The Hi-Lo Country: Tale of 2 men in post-WW2 New Mexico who fall in love with the identical lady and she’s already married to someone else. A tribute to the dude way of life and the delights of real kinship, this film has so much going for it (including Harrelson’s wonderful performance as a hell-raiser and Oliver Stapleton’s cinematography) that it’s a pity it doesn’t hit the bull’s-eye and Arquette is so boring. Cast includes Woody Harrelson, Billy Crudup, Patricia Arquette, Sam Elliott, Cole Hauser, Penelope Cruz, Darren Caves, Jacob Vargas, James Gammon, Lane Smith, and Katy Jurado. (114 minutes, 1998)
Alfred the Great: This tale of youthful leader of 9th-century England can’t choose if it’s a serious historical journal or wide swashbuckler and triumphs in neither. Cast includes David Hemmings, Michael York, Prunella Ransome, Colin Blakely, Julian Glover, and Ian McKellen. (122 minutes, 1969)
The Indian Runner: A temperamental piece in reference to a youthful gentleman’s efforts to comprehend, and get closer to, his brother who’s just returned from Vietnam. The film is lazy at times, however filled with feeling and reality, and is relatively moving. Hefty acting jobs all around, with unconventional although powerful projecting of Bronson as the boys’ depressed dad. Cast includes David Morse, Viggo Mortensen, Valeria Golino, Patricia Arquette, Charles Bronson, Sandy Dennis, Dennis Hopper, Benicio Del Toro, and Kenny Stabler. (125 minutes, 1991)
