Airsoft Guns Look Like Real Guns

by Anthony Carter on September 18, 2009

Airsoft guns look like real guns, and that’s the point. And they are, in fact, real, but they don’t shoot actual real size bullets. These replicas of their real counterparts shoot a non-metallic pellet that comes in a 6mm caliber. They put them out at velocities that can vary from 30 to 260 m/s with the aid of either compressed gas or a piston that’s spring-driven. They come in an 8mm version as well.

This new hobby has been taken up by thousands, and is growing every day. Yet, if you ask around, you’ll find that just as many still haven’t heard of them. They remind you of the BB guns we used to have, only they don’t look like a BB gun, they look like the gun they are fashioned after. This gives them a lot more uses than just a BB gun. They look extremely real.

You wouldn’t think of these different uses right off the bat, but with their realistic mimicking of the real thing, they make excellent movie and play props. And they can be utilized by the military and the police for training exercises. Collectors love the many different makes and styles that are available. You can have a lot of great fun with these guns at home and at game sites.

All the airsoft guns make use of one of three different power sources. Either electric, gas, or a loaded spring. The spring-loaded guns aren’t quite as powerful as the gas or electric ones, but they aren’t as costly either. They can make good training guns for learning how to play airsoft. If you have an electric one, then it runs off batteries. If you have a gas one, it runs off a CO2 cartridge.

Some people who first look at these guns are actually afraid to play the game. It’s due to the great craftsmanship of the manufacturers. They make them look so real it’s hard to know that they aren’t. This has caused many to question their use, due to the chance that criminals may use them to commit crimes. But a law has been put into place making it illegal for people to dispose of the bright orange tip that marks them as toys and not the real deal.

These guns are for adults, and when minors use them they should be supervised. They’re not lethal, but like a BB gun, they can be dangerous if you get hit in the eye. So just like with a BB gun, you need to practice some gun safety and be smart in your use of them. But when handled correctly, they can provide a lot of fun and entertainment.

As far as price is concerned, you can find an airsoft gun in your price range. Starter guns can be found for only about $9. 99, and are good for learning about the airsoft guns. For those who want a little better quality of replication, then mid-range prices can go from close to $50 and settle around $200. And if you’re a collector and want top quality, they go from there up to as high as $1, 000. But you can surely find one that’s within your budget limits.

Airsoft guns mimic real guns but provide a lot of fun for those who appreciate them. If you’ve ever played paint-ball then you’ll have an understanding of why these airsoft guns are so popular. They’re a great source of entertainment, and provide good training props for organizations who have need of them. Their popularity grows with each passing day. If you like guns, give them a look.

Fundraising Ideas: Quiz Night

by Mike Tants on September 18, 2009

Quizzes can be an excellent way to raise money. They can be arranged very cheaply, the prizes can be given by sponsors and they are highly entertaining!

Getting the questions right:

To keep the quiz as entertaining as possible keep the questions varied. I always include at least one picture round, and have questions from all eras to include all age groups. Subjects should be interesting and should range from general knowledge to song lyrics, science and nature to TV and film.

You also don’t want to include too many questions that people won’t be able to guess. If someone doesn’t know the answer, they should at least be able to have a pop. People are here to enjoy themselves and having too many difficult questions can actually have the opposite affect – you don’t want to make your participants feel stupid!

When I write a quiz I have 20% of the questions relatively easy, 60% medium difficulty and 20% hard. 20% should be easy enough for most people to know the answer, most people should know about half the medium questions, of which I aim for around 60% and the rest (20%) are there to separate the winners from the losers.

If you are planning on writing your own quiz there are plenty of free online resources to do this – however, this can be time consuming as you need to make sure there are a good range of questions, for all ages and of different difficulties and it may be better for you to buy a quality quiz pack from a decent supplier – it should set you back only a couple of pounds but could be well worth it.

The importance of being organised:

Plan in advance!! Make sure the accommodation is adequate, with enough tables and seating for all. On the night ensure there are enough pens and that you have printed enough answer sheets for participants. If necessary, ensure the PA system works and make sure you have spare pens and answer sheets.

How much can a quiz raise?

A recent fundraiser quiz night I attended had around 60 people enter, at 3 a pop. This raised 180 immediately, but there were also sandwiches and beverages donated that could be bought by the punters and I would guess everyone spent at least 2 each on food and drink, bringing the total to 300. The prizes were also donated and there was a 50 fee to hire the hall ” so this quiz night raised around 250 ” not bad for a couple of hours and everyone enjoyed themselves!

How To Run A Good Quiz Night

by Mike Tants on September 18, 2009

The ingredients for a successful quiz: challenging questions, good atmosphere, a few beers and good company. If you are organising a quiz night these are some of the criteria you should be going for!

Questions

Questions do not need to be really hard in order for them to be good. Quiz participants certainly want to be challenged, and most definitely don’t want to hear the same old questions time and again. Therefore a balance of difficulty needs to be met.

When writing quizzes I aim for 20, 20, 60; that is 20 percent of questions fairly easy, 20 percent fairly hard and 60 percent of average difficulty. This is because you want to allow everyone to contribute to the answers, not just the handful of people who have an encyclopaedic brain.

Prizes

It is a myth that you need a big prize to make a quiz more interesting. Most people taking part in a quiz do so for entertainment, and the challenge of sparring with other team’s knowledge, not for a large prize. However, giving out the prize can also provide entertainment, perhaps by encouraging the winning team to gamble with the prize in order to win another.

Spinning a wheel, answering another question, playing a Higher or Lower game of 5 cards, whatever!

The Quizmaster

The quizmaster needs to be confident speaking to large numbers of people, fair but firm, patient with the quizzers and good humoured. They should never allow themselves to be bullied into giving an extra point for an answer that is almost right. Their decision should always be final.

Alcohol

Not an essential ingredient (unless held in a pub!) but a few beers for a fundraiser or social event can create a fun party atmosphere. You don’t want to make people feel like they are taking part in an exam! Make it as fun as possible.
