Just Ask for Diamond: Witty, if infrequently cartoonish, investigator film burlesque, in reference to the baby sibling of a dumbbell detective and the puzzle enclosing a box of candy. Nunzio: Retarded Brooklyn market delivery boy Proval envisions he’s Superman and then falls in love with bakery associate Feldshuh. Soft tale improved by Proval’s fine acting. Richard the Third: An elaborate rendition of Shakespeare’s journal of an ambitious 15th-century British baron and his court captivates. Cast includes Laurence Olivier, John Gielgud, Ralph Richardson, Claire Bloom, Alec Clunes, Cedric Hardwicke, Stanley Baker, and Pamela Brown. (155 minutes, 1955)
Hail Mary: Uninteresting, overblown updating of the tale of Christ’s birth, with Mary a student basketball competitor! Even though still a virgin, she finds herself pregnant. This film kindled much dissension and was even condemned by the Pope. Cast includes Myriem Roussel, Thierry Rode, Philippe Lacoste, Manon Anderson, and Juliette Binoche. (107minutes, 1985)
The Far Country: Cattleman Stewart, a verified hermit, brings his herd to Alaska and finds nothing but trouble. A different Western set against vibrant backdrop of mining camp towns.
