The Sony Playstation 3 Slim is Sony’s latest release of its star games console.
The Playstation 3 Slim is relatively similar to what it was like in the last
version, but the design has undergone a few changes.
As said before, the design on the PS3 Slim has been modified from the old
version. The Slim is 33% smaller, 36% lighter and 34% less power consuming
than the old PS3.
Sony have also changed the touch-sensitive buttons to standard push-buttons, and have removed the master power switch at the back of the unit.
One of the modifications of the Slim that I don’t like as much is the removal of the
amazing gloss that used to make the console look pretty desirable. The “Playstation 3″
writing has been simplified to the simplistic etching of “PS3″. These changes have
made the Slim pretty, well, dull.
Gone also is the nice silver chrome trim on the PS3 Slim. Maybe the simplifying
of the design has been Sony’s attempt to make it cheaper to manufacture and sell,
following the losses they made with the sales of some of the old PS3s.
At least the two USB, HDMI, AV Multi-out, ethernet and optical out ports on the PS3
Slim are still there, as they were on the previous model. It’s a good thing that there
were no sacrifices there. The power cable has been shrunk down to being just a two-pin cable.
There’s still a BluRay drive on the Slim, which will let you play your movies in
a brilliant 1080p of quality! It can now also bitstream Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD
Master Audio to a receiver through HDMI.
There is a slight drawback with the Slim’s DVD and CD playback; there’s quite a bit
more audio jitter on this model than on the last. However, the impressive DVD upscaling
feature will overshadow this problem, as you’re gaping at the awesome quality of your
films.
This all begs the question; should I buy the PS3 Slim? At almost 250, the Slim
is well priced in Playstation standards, but in comparison to the 360 and Wii,
it may seem a little pricey. However, it’s worth to take into consideration the
fact that the Slim has a built-in BluRay player, and in many cases normal
BluRay players are actually more expensive than the Slim. If you’ve got the money
and you’re after a gaming treat, this Slim will do well for you. However, if you
already have the old PS3, there’s not really any reason why you shouldn’t just
remain on that.
